THE USE OF THE TEMPOROPARIETAL FASCIAL FLAP

Abstract
The temporoparietal fascia is an ideal tissue source as an arterialized transposition flap as well as for free transfer to distant sites where ultrathin coverage is either desirable or mandatory. Microvascular transfer is facilitated by means of its large vessels, ample pedicle and ability to be grafted on either side. It can be transfered alone as an isolated tissue, or it can simultaneously transport periosteum and bone from below or hair-bearing skin from above, and its donor scar is hidden in the hair.
The flap is useful in covering exposed bone and tendon without adding unwanted bulk, in providing thin flap coverage in facial reconstruction, in covering vital structures, in providing neovascularity, and in estabilishing gliding-tendon mechanism.
The authors have experienced reconsturction of the deformities of the auricle, face, and hand with this flap. Technique and clinical application are discussed in detail.
